Did you know that the United States is the only developed country on the planet that doesn’t have guaranteed maternity leave? Unfortunately that’s only the beginning. There are many things about how we handle the childbirth experience that need to change in this country.
This excellent article from Babble contains some eye-opening information, like how other countries offer safe alternative options for pain control to mothers in labor (such as laughing gas) that we don’t typically use, instead opting for epidurals.
Many women in the U.S. see doctors throughout their pregnancy, but evidence suggest Nurse Midwives are the way to go, resulting in healthier mothers and babies. There is also far less postpartum care available to moms, while most other developed countries have nurses visit mothers and their babies in their own home.
