Before our first baby was born I have heard of cloth diapers, but I didn't think it was for us. We decided to use chlorine free disposables and even found a great deal on craigslist, we stocked up on unopened bulk packages of our diaper of choice. It wasn't until six months after the birth of our baby that I started to seriously consider cloth diapering. Why? Because she had a non-stop rash the entire time. I tried nearly every diaper cream that existed, except for maybe a few of the most toxic ones - nothing worked. You don't even want to know what happened if I forgot to apply some cream at a diaper change.
I've had enough and decided to try some stay dry pocket diapers and fitteds. Our first two brands were Fuzzi Bunz and Thirsties. I didn't know whether to expect a miracle or not - but that's exactly what I got! The diaper rash was entirely gone after only one day. What was I thinking?! Why didn't I try this before?! I was kicking myself for having made her suffer for so long when the solution was so simple. With only seven diapers we started cloth full time and never looked back. We did laundry every day, but it was incredible to finally have the peace of a clear baby bum and not having to buy another diaper cream ever again.
Of course, not every baby is so sensitive to disposables. But it makes me wonder what's in them - which now I know and that's a story worthy of another post. Have you had a similar experience with cloth? Have you tried them out of diaper rash desperation and not necessarily to save money or the planet? We would love to hear your stories!
